Into the sunburst lamp, even though it is totally out of budget + our current place has v high ceilings. (Our current place also came with a sectional mirror in the entryway. One of the first things one sees and I really like that.)
Also lol‘d at that description of Lorelai‘s would-be FB bio. I doubt we would get on in real life. I first watched the show when I was younger, so it has that cosy/nostalgia feel to it for me. But when I crave an easy distraction and dip back in, I definitely fast forward through some of the scenes/don’t usually watch more a season.
I am a fan of the round-ups! I like that they are a varied mix and that you write about your thoughts behind the items (instead of, say, serving us a collage with a caption of links and few or no accompanying sentences). Since these sort of things come from writers who are in various countries (I’m in mainland EU), I cannot necessarily buy the exact item without high duties/shipping and am more interested in the ideas behind the picks/suggestions for pairing.
Thank you! I did consider scrapping the explanations behind each pick to save myself time (and I wonder if people read them or just scroll for more images) but I actually think they're pretty crucial to understand why each item was chosen, because there's always a reason! I can't afford most of the things I like either (my edits are annoying for all involved) but I like to know that I can refer back to them and look for something similar / set an alert on eBay / wait for the sales, etc.
I'm at the end of season three of Gilmore Girls now and it just continues to grow on me more and more, it's kind of like eating a whole tub of ice cream. I know I should give it a rest but I can't stop 😆.
I do love a good poll. I definitely subscribed for the home and design content, though your writing style is so engaging I have been thoroughly enjoying your thoughtful posts on life, your experience of it, and related matters. As a male reader I have to confess to being selfishly relieved to see that the poll revealed little interest in fashion content. Thanks for all your interesting posts this past year. And I sincerely hope that your health has improved, I know from experience the frustration of having mystery symptoms that sap your enthusiasm for life.
Ah thank you, and can I just say I ESPECIALLY appreciate you being here as most of my subscribers are women and I know the majority of what I share will feel irrelevant to you. I won't bore everyone with any more posts about my health but the current theory is covid-triggered autoimmune/nervous system issues. That I can deal with tbh as they are annoying but not life-threatening and that was the initial 'what if' worry that had me in a real state of panic. Thank you for asking!
I love the round ups! You have such a good eye, and I always want to know what people with interesting taste are being drawn to at the moment (be that decor, clothes, media, etc...).
That Studio Ashby light is gorgeous. I'm a sucker for all celestial themed decor, tbh. For a more budget friendly alternative, I've been eyeing the Re Flush Mount light (22") from Visual Comfort. I love the thicker rays alternating with the more delicate ones.
Congrats on the new flooring! I know the old carpet has been a source of ire for a while. Hopefully the cork will help with the acoustics as well as the aesthetics.
Hey Eleanor. Ok, I want the jacket and the lazy trainers, perhaps the sunburst lamp too. Interesting that most people only really wanted one post a week. I might have to ask my peeps what they think. There’s nothing worse than being bombarded. Tricky balance though if people are paying.
I totally agree, I would expect people to want value for money and therefore, receive as much content as possible, then they can decide what they fancy reading and what they don't. I consciously left the poll open to all as I wanted as many responses as poss but it would be really interesting to ask that one question again to my paid community only and see how it affects the outcome!
Personally, I think once a week is perfect but I also don't mind if someone else publishes twice, it might mean that I miss a few things but it certainly doesn't bug me. I think quite crucially though, that's because I turned my email notifications off, so I don't get any emails from Substack – I only discover new posts by checking on desktop or going on the app.
Sort of upset you introduced me to that waxed cotton jacket.. 😆
And thank you for sharing your survey results! I’ve also felt a (guilty) need to write 2x letters a week but interesting to learn that readers may not actually want content that often. I wonder if paid subs specifically might feel different!
Yes! I did regret afterwards that I didn't separate the questions out to all / paid. I wanted the most responses possible to get a broad overview but now I'd have to do another one for my paid subs only, just to be sure that they feel the same.
Even still, it's so interesting that people who are subscribing for free (and aren't making a financial commitment) still don't want an excessive amount of reading material. I thought everyone would want more, more, more but then that doesn't reflect my own reading habits here, so it all makes sense!
Yes!! So interesting. I also think people don’t actually know what they want in the end, myself included. Like, if you asked me if I’d want to get any newsletter daily I would say no, but in practice I guess I don’t actually mind the ones that come daily! I just read when I can.
That's another point I didn't think about but so true! Depends on the writer too. Some newsletters I'm happy to dip in and out of and I regularly skip posts if I don't fancy the sound of the title, but others I would happily read every day and I'd go out of my way to make sure I didn't miss one.
Thank you for this great newsletter. I went down a rabbit hole via one of your links and ended up buying 2 mid-century vases. And the David Mellor products are fabulous! Very tempted to get a couple of glass dishes and some bowls. I will be poorer but very happy.
Hehe, sorry for the vase enabling! I walked round their Marylebone shop the other day clutching a few bits but then reminded myself of how god awful our kitchen is and you can't polish a turd, so decided to hold off until I ever have a kitchen that I actually want to be in!
Recork! It's kind of like wooden flooring in that it comes in long strips with bevelled edges and various different stain options, like floorboards. We're not paying for it so tbh I'm happy to go along with whatever our landlord likes (aside from our current carpet), but I've also seen friends use cork from Colour Flooring Company and that's super nice – it has more of a distinctive grain and doesn't have the bevelled edges, so it looks like a smoother surface overall.
Loved this (your lists are my fave) and yes please to seeing more of your newly cork-floored flat transformation!!
I really feel you about being fed up of where you live but I hope the flooring brings you a new lease of life in the flat. I recently took the doors off one of our built in wardrobes and the walk in wardrobe vibes it now gives our spare room is incredible. I now want to go into that room! And I will do, whilst shutting my eyes along the way to block out the migraine inducing farmyard wallpaper on the wall…
I'd always liked them but seeing how it looks in various lights and then at night when it's functioning as an actual light – it pushed me over the edge! Though I could never afford the SA one, so it will be a patient search on eBay/Vinterior etc for me!
Why not get the Barbour jacket instead of Toteme? Toteme copied Barbour anyways, and it’s better quality. I’ve had mine 13 years and still in great shape through the many wears and years
I have always like Barbour as a heritage brand but I've never loved the exact proportions of their jackets on me whenever I've tried them. Maybe I need to try more though and give them another chance as I know they have more options than ever these days! I agree it's nice to support an OG!
I love the design content, but appreciate the rest as well.
Gilmore Girls is a comfort watch for me, and I love the dialogue, and even think that one of the things I love is how annoying they both are - the whole thing hangs on their joint inability to ever make a rational decision!
Thanks bud! I did try the Uniqlo version a week or so ago but I felt like it was a bit shorter than I wanted? It's a great jacket though and a VERY good price point as an alternative! Not a day goes by where I don't curse my magnetic pull towards things that I can't afford!
Hello hello as a fairly new-ish subscriber but most definitely subscribed for the design content. I however also here for these sorts of posts just not *just* these sorts of posts I guess. I think that’s where they lose value(?!). Loved this! Hate that I now can’t un-see that wax jacket!
Thank you! It's such a good one isn't it! Not sure if you've spotted it before btw but just in case it's helpful, in the comment above, India has linked to a good high-street alternative!

hehe i like the ice cream metaphor; it is especially apt for this show :D

Loving the Swedish sectional mirror and Curatorio—what a great source for art! Into this roundup
Thanks Jenny 😊

Would love to know where you're getting your cork flooring from!

Lol at the farmyard wallpaper. When you're feeling tired of a place, the smallest changes can make the biggest difference!
That Studio Ashby pendant has not left my mental wish list! Will take any form of sunshine....
I'd always liked them but seeing how it looks in various lights and then at night when it's functioning as an actual light – it pushed me over the edge! Though I could never afford the SA one, so it will be a patient search on eBay/Vinterior etc for me!

Click, click, click, so many good finds as ever! There’s a verryyyy similar jacket here for ~10th of the price - https://go.shopmy.us/p-7196740 ;)
